Virtual SMART Girls Club - '21 and '22

During the 2020 – 2021 school year we launched a virtual program structure that allowed for flexibility in how the program was designed and to ensure accessibility to all girls who wanted to participate. Through virtual SMART Girls we were able to serve girls from 26 different elementary schools and 11 different middle schools, accounting for girls who are homeschooled. The purpose of the virtual SMART Girls program was to accommodate those who were virtual learning due to COVID-19, to do our part in the mitigation of COVID-19, and to make sure the program was accessible to those who did not have SMART Girls program available in person at school. Overall, we had 85 new SMART Girls join us for virtual club at some point in the three sessions.

The virtual club started in February 2021 and end in May 2021. The virtual club was broken down into 3 sessions. Each session contained 4 weeks of curriculum and activities for the participating SMART Girls. Between elementary and middle school, club days and times were split into grades 4th to 5th and 6th through 8th. During each session club days were held on Fridays and Saturdays with one club opportunity for each group of SMART Girls based on their grade. For each session, club day, and time curriculum and activities were led by women in S.T.E.M.

Materials for activities were prepared and distributed to SMART Girls before the start of each session. This ensure that they had all the materials they needed to be part of the program and activities, with no additional costs or financial barriers. Electronic devices were available to rent to ensure no technological barriers for a SMART Girl to attend club.

The YWCA Lincoln SMART Girls program hopes to provide another academic year of virtual SMART Girls Club, as well as in person during after school programs and participating CLC programs.
